Creating visual expressions with clay, fiber, and digital art, Mary Helen delights in pushing the lines between pretty and creepy, fantasy and reality, and art versus function. Her work is inspired by nature, femininity, and the mysterious worlds beyond our own. Based in Austin, Texas.
When she isn't making dirty pots or strange sculptures, Mary Helen runs a miniature home-based studio called ATX Kiln Club and works as an art instructor at Figment Creative Labs.
She also freelances s a food stylist and prop fabricator for films, commercials, and media publications in the central Texas area.
I enjoy using beautiful things to make people feel happy, sad, and a little bit uncomfortable. My work uses a variety of elements, but stoneware and porcelain ceramics form the base of every piece. My art is inspired by nature, femininity, and the mysterious worlds beyond our own.
Reproduction has always been a defining feature for women. While they are not ALL of what it means to be a woman, their presence, absence, and ownership play a huge role in all of our lives.
My work puts a sharp focus on biologically female body parts for this very reason. Does a vulva make you a woman? No. But it remains a symbol of our collective magic, our collective struggles, and our collective stories. All women have a deeply complicated relationship with our sexual organs.
Though our individual stories and physical bodies vary greatly, we share the experience of coming to terms with our bodies and all the joy and grief they have given us.
